Academic pedagogy and curriculum[edit]

The academic approach at IIM Ahmedabad is heavily modeled after the Harvard Business School's case study method. This pedagogy requires students to analyze real-world business scenarios, fostering participatory learning and decision-making skills. The curriculum is noted for its high level of academic rigor and a strict grading system. IIM-A is often associated with producing graduates for consulting and general management roles.

IIM Calcutta maintains a historical emphasis on quantitative methods, finance, and economics, influenced by its initial partnership with MIT Sloan. While the case study method is utilized, the institute places greater weight on analytical models and mathematical grounding. Consequently, IIM-C is frequently regarded as a premier destination for finance placements, including investment banking and private equity.

Campus environment and culture[edit]

The IIM Ahmedabad campus was designed by American architect Louis Kahn and is characterized by its exposed red brick structures and geometric apertures. The environment is described by students as formal and academically intensive. The campus is located within the city of Ahmedabad, providing proximity to various urban amenities and industrial hubs.

The IIM Calcutta campus is situated in Joka, a suburb of Kolkata. It is widely known for its natural landscape, which includes seven lakes within the premises. The student culture at IIM-C is often reported to be more relaxed compared to the strict discipline of IIM-A, with a strong emphasis on peer-to-peer learning and student-run initiatives.

Accreditation and recognition[edit]

Both institutions hold the "Triple Crown" accreditation, meaning they are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Association of MBAs (AMBA), and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS). IIM Calcutta was the first management school in India to achieve this status in 2014. In international rankings, such as the Financial Times Global MBA Ranking, both institutes regularly feature among the top 100 business schools worldwide.
