A King size and a California King size mattress are two of the largest standard mattress sizes available, but they cater to different needs based on their dimensions.[1] A common misconception is that the California King is larger than the standard King, but the standard King has a slightly larger total surface area.[2] The primary difference is that a standard King is wider, while a California King is longer.[3]
A standard King mattress, also known as an Eastern King, measures 76 inches wide and 80 inches long.[4] A California King, or Western King, measures 72 inches wide and 84 inches long.[5] This means the standard King is 4 inches wider, and the California King is 4 inches longer.

The most significant difference between the two mattress sizes is the distribution of their surface area. The standard King's dimensions of 76 by 80 inches give it a wider, more square-like appearance. This additional width provides 38 inches of personal space for each person in a couple, which is the same width as a Twin mattress. This makes it a suitable choice for couples who value personal space or for families whose children might share the bed.
The California King's dimensions of 72 by 84 inches make it narrower and longer. This rectangular shape sacrifices 4 inches of width compared to a standard King but adds 4 inches in length.[2] The extra length is advantageous for taller individuals, particularly those over 6 feet, as it helps prevent their feet from hanging off the end of the mattress.[5] It is the longest of the standard mattress sizes.
Room Size and Placement[edit]
Both mattress sizes require a large bedroom to avoid feeling cramped. For a standard King bed, a room should be at least 12 feet by 10 feet. Due to its extra length, a California King fits better in rooms that are at least 12 feet by 12 feet, and it is particularly well-suited for narrower, longer rooms.[1] Designers generally recommend having at least 24 to 30 inches of walking space around the bed. The wider profile of a standard King can make it a tighter fit through doorways compared to the narrower California King, which may be more difficult to maneuver around tight corners and stairways due to its length.[3]
