ChatGPT and ChatGPT Plus[edit]

OpenAI released ChatGPT, a conversational large language model (LLM), on November 30, 2022. The tool allows users to interact with an artificial intelligence through a text-based interface. On February 1, 2023, the company announced ChatGPT Plus, a paid subscription tier designed to provide more consistent access and additional technical features. While the core chat functionality remains available to both groups, the two tiers differ in their underlying model access, usage limits, and integrated software tools.

Model access and performance[edit]

The standard version of ChatGPT historically operated on the GPT-3.5 model. Following the release of the GPT-4o model in May 2024, OpenAI shifted the free tier to a "limited access" model for its flagship engine. Once a free user reaches a specific message threshold, the system reverts to GPT-4o mini, a smaller and less computationally expensive version of the model.

ChatGPT Plus provides subscribers with full access to GPT-4 and a significantly higher capacity for GPT-4o. According to OpenAI, Plus users can send up to five times as many messages to GPT-4o as free users before encountering rate limits. This tier also provides priority access during periods of high traffic, whereas free users may experience slower response times or service unavailability when demand exceeds server capacity.

Supplemental tools and multimodality[edit]

The ChatGPT Plus subscription includes several proprietary tools that are restricted or unavailable in the free tier. One such tool is DALL-E 3, which enables the generation of images directly within the chat interface based on text prompts. While free users can access some multimodal features, Plus users have higher limits for analyzing images and documents.

Another distinction is the "Advanced Data Analysis" feature, previously known as Code Interpreter. This tool allows the model to write and execute Python code in a sandboxed environment. Users can upload spreadsheets, PDF files, or datasets to perform calculations, generate graphs, or convert file formats.

OpenAI also introduced "GPTs," which are custom versions of ChatGPT tailored for specific tasks, such as tutoring or creative writing. While free users can interact with these bots through the GPT Store, the ability to build and deploy custom GPTs is reserved for Plus subscribers. Subscription also grants access to "Advanced Voice Mode," a feature using the GPT-4o engine to handle real-time audio conversations with lower latency and emotional inflection.
