Kindle 2 vs. Kindle DX

The Kindle 2 and Kindle DX were second-generation e-reader devices released by Amazon in 2009.[1][2] The Kindle 2 became available for purchase on February 23, 2009, as a successor to the original Kindle.[1][3] Following a few months later, Amazon launched the Kindle DX on May 6, 2009, which was a larger device targeted at students and professionals for reading textbooks and documents.[1][2] While sharing some underlying technology, the two models offered distinct features tailored to different use cases.[4]

The most significant difference between the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX was the screen size. The Kindle 2 featured a 6-inch E Ink display, whereas the Kindle DX was equipped with a much larger 9.7-inch screen.[5] This larger display on the DX was intended to make reading newspapers, magazines, and academic materials easier than on the smaller screen of the Kindle 2.

In addition to the screen size, the Kindle DX offered more internal storage, providing 4 GB of space compared to the 2 GB in the Kindle 2.[5] This allowed the DX to hold a larger library of e-books and documents, with an estimated capacity of 3,500 books to the Kindle 2's 1,500.[5][1] The Kindle DX also introduced native support for PDF files, a feature not available on the Kindle 2, which could struggle to format complex PDFs correctly.[5][4] Another distinguishing feature of the DX was its screen's ability to automatically rotate, allowing for wide landscape views of maps, tables, and other content.[5][4]

The larger size of the Kindle DX, however, meant it was heavier and less portable than the Kindle 2. The Kindle 2 weighed 10.2 ounces, while the Kindle DX weighed 18.9 ounces.[5] Both devices included a physical keyboard and were not equipped with touchscreens. They also both featured a text-to-speech function that could read books aloud.[1]
